The basic rhythm section
(consisting of grand piano, drums, and electric guitar) was recorded at
Toronto Sound Studios on October 25, 1976 with producer Terry Brown
engineering. This was the last of the bed tracks to be recorded for the
"Hope" album.
On January 13, 1977 a 28-piece string and woodwind section was
overdubbed onto the 24-track master tape at Olympic Sound Studios
(London) with arranger Doug Riley conducting. Later that same day
French horns were also recorded onto this track.
The fuzz bass in the "heavy" sections was performed on a Rickenbacker
4001 bass.
The harmonium used on this track (as well as on "The Loneliest of
Creatures") is an authentic pedal harmonium which was recorded inside a
small enclosed vocal booth.
During February 1977, in order to meet the deadline for delivery of the
master tapes to Capitol Records (which was scheduled for later that
month), several weeks had to be block booked at Toronto Sound Studios
with continuous recording virtually round the clock using two teams
working in shifts: one team was comprised of John and producer Terry
Brown, with Dee and Terry Draper making up the other working duo.
