The basic rhythm section
(consisting of drums, bass guitar, and electric guitar which had been
patched through a Leslie speaker), was recorded in the early fall of
1976 at Toronto Sound Studios with producer Terry Brown engineering.
On January 13, 1977 a string section and French horns were overdubbed
onto the 24-track master tape at Olympic Sound Studios (London) with
arranger Doug Riley conducting.
While overdubbing drum licks in the bridge section, it was decided that
the drum break was too short and should be extended by two beats. To
achieve this, a length of blank 2" tape had to be measured (using the
click track as a guide) and spliced into the master tape. The drum
break was then re-recorded over the newly elongated section.
In April 1977, the band acquired a Moog polymoog synthesizer (one of
the first in Canada and at the time considered to be state-of-the-art
technology). This versatile keyboard was used extensively on this track
to embellish the previously recorded orchestral instrumentation. Its
most notable appearance here was the flute-like sound which opens and
closes the track on the commercially released version of the album.
